RetroPlayer
By Mats Eirik Hansen

Introduction

RetroPlayer is designed not only be a player of retro computer music but also be a complete management application for such music.

So the intended workflow is that music files are imported into RetroPlayer which scans the files and adds songs found in the files to the RetroPlayer Library. There is a configurable minium song duration that is used to prevent sound effects from e.g. SID files to be added to the library.

After songs have been added to the library it possible to view and edit information about one and more song. All songs have the following editable attributes.

All these attributes are stored in the RetroPlayer Library and RetroPlayer will provide initial values for some of them. Exactly which attributes which will have initial values provided depends on the song format and how the song was imported.

These attributes can later be used for display, sorting, grouping and smart playlists.

Importing files

Files can be imported by simply dragging and dropping files on the Library in the sidebar but it is often easier to use collections. Collections are collections of files and there are three different types of collections.

  1. The Modland Collection which provides support for searching for downloading files from the Modland module archive.
  2. The High Voltage SID Collection (HVSC) which supports downloading the complete HVSC and searching for files.
  3. User collections which is a folder with files that can be searched recursively for songs.

Ad-hoc usage

While the intended workflow is to import files into library it is also possible to use RetroPlayer for more ad-hoc music playback. This can be done by:

  1. Drag and drop files on the application icon in the dock. This will add songs found in the files to the play queue.
  2. Drag and drop files on the Play Queue in the sidebar. This will add songs found in the files to the play queue.
  3. Drag and drop files in the Playlist area in the sidebar. This will add songs found in the files to a new or existing playlist.

RetroPlayer will search for songs in the files in the same way as when importing the files but the found songs will not be added to the library.
